BMW EfficientDynamics
BMW’s committment to EfficientDynamics, embodied in the BMW Hydrogen 7, the Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, AdvancedDiesel Technology, and our Valvetronic Engines, has earned BMW the prestigious Greenest Manufacturer of the Year Award by green-car-guide.com.
At first glance, preserving the environment and maximizing performance seem like two entirely separate goals. But BMW realizes how linked they are. BMW AdvancedDiesel with BluePerformance, for example, has been re-engineered to have a 99% lower emission rate and a far greater fuel economy than the diesel from the past. And this environmentally- friendly diesel doesn't sacrifice performance. In fact, the BMW 6 cylinder diesel engine has more torque than most V8s. Introduced to the U.S. in the fall, the 335d and X5 3.0sd have the potential to revolutionize the way the world thinks about diesel technology.
BMW continues working on its other innovations, such as Valvetronic. The motivation behind BMW’s patented Valvetronic technology was simple: to enable the engine to breathe more easily. BMW engineers believed that this would allow for increased power output and optimized fuel-efficiency, and they were right. Both goals were accomplished by varying the lift height of the valves to regulate intake instead of using a traditional throttle. This means that at lower engine loads, the valves open a smaller amount, whereas at full power they open completely. This revolutionary technology has helped make it possible for BMW to improve its fleet average fuel economy more than any other manufacturer, while at the same time improving performance substantially.
